Element has no corporate parent, it is an open source project that is provided as a free service to the world, however it does cost us the less than handful of developers and core-contributors money. We have to pay for web hosting, development hardware, and electricity, in addition to the hundreds of hours a month we spend maintaining, developing, and providing support for the system. While Element does generate some funding through sponsors, partners, and web ads it is hardly enough to fund or expand the project as we would like. We're not complaining we love open source software, we enjoy making it and will continue to.
However we have big plans for Element! We'd like to generate enough funds to continually enhance our support channels, purchase newer testing hardware, donate back to open source projects we rely on, and allow our small volunteer team to eventually work on Element full-time. So that along with our open source community we can make the system the best solution available for HTPCs and set-top boxes. This won't be possible unless Element can provide confidence to end users that the project is not only stable but sustainable into the future, your contribution helps ensure this.
That said we will never become a 'commercial distribution', users and developers will always be able to obtain Element
100% free of charge. We are also committed to providing Element as open source software and will never release any software we build and distribute under any other forms of licensing.
By making a contribution to Element your aiding in its continued progress and development and showing your own commitment to the sustainability of free open source software projects. At request we will provide a list of all individual donors (first name and location) along with a list of
donation we provide to other projects.
